SFYBP Board Endorses the Save SF BIKE Slate in the SFBC Board Elections

The San Francisco Yellow Bike Project (SFYBP) Board of Directors is proud to announce the endorsement of the Save SF Bike slate in the 2015 San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (SFBC) Board election. The candidates on this slate are all committed to preserving democracy within the SFBC board elections, to serving and bringing attention to underserved residents who bike in our city, as well as promoting more member involvement within the organization. They all have qualified experience and will bring a diverse perspective to the SFBC as the board embarks on important long range projects of hiring a new executive director and writing the next 5 year plan.

We could not be more proud that our own co-founder, board member, and cycling advocate, Mary Kay Chin, is running as part of the Save SF Bike slate. Over the last 5 years, we have worked side by side with Mary Kay as a board member of SFYBP. We have seen firsthand her commitment to serving the underserved and to promoting bicycling throughout the entire city during her thousands of hours of work as a dedicated board member of SFYBP.

Earlier this year the Board of Directors for the SF Bicycle Coalition (many of whom are part of the opposing “Love SF Bike” slate) raised a vote to the membership ostensibly protecting member privacy. Some of the sharper minds in the membership saw that there was something else happening with the vote and spoke up. They noticed that the actions of the board to address complaints by less than 1% of the membership would eliminate the voting rights of all SFBC members. This would effectively end the membership’s ability to affect changes within the organization. These initial concerned members determined that the vote, which had been passed, had been conducted illegally and if the SFBC Board of Directors pushed forward with the result they would face legal action.

To ensure members of the SFBC continue to have the right to vote, these advocates joined from many different walks of life to form the Save SF Bike slate. This slate is not only concerned with promoting democracy within the SFBC, but also promoting diversity in the membership, outreach to underserved communities, and more member involvement. Over the last few years, these values seem to have been placed low in priority by the current SFBC Board of Directors, and the Love SFBC slate.

While we love the SFBC, we do not support those who seek to eliminate member rights in a misleading manner, or those who act with righteous indignation towards opposing views as some on the current SFBC Board of Directors and their supporters have recently. The Save SF Bike slate promotes democracy within the organization, broader outreach, and more member involvement- all of which are in line with the values of SFYBP.

For these reason and more, SFYBP proudly endorses the entire Save SF Bike slate:

Mary Kay Chin – Co-founder of SF Yellow Bike Project, Awarded 2015 Golden Wheel
Jeremy Pollock – Legislative Aide to SF Supervisor John Avalos
Dr. Shirley Johnson – Leader of BIKES ONboard project, Awarded 2014 Golden Wheel
Bob Allen – Director of Transportation Justice Program at Urban Habitat
Oscar Grande – Founder of Bicis del Pueblo community bike project
Beatriz Herrera – Former community organizer with Causa Justa::Just Cause
Jane Martin – Senior Political Community Organizer, SEIU United Service Workers West

For a more inclusive cycling future please vote for these candidates today! Voting is open until 12/31/15.
